About Us

The mid-1980s witnessed an increasingly volatile commercial insurance market for public entities seeking tort liability coverage. In many cases, coverage was unavailable or unaffordable. During the time of that crisis, the South Dakota Public Assurance Alliance (SDPAA) was formed by the South Dakota Municipal League to be a stable, reliable partner for public entities. SDPAA began providing coverage in 1987 and has been committed to the mission of providing exceptional coverage and service to our Members ever since.

The Member-owned SDPAA helps protect municipalities, counties, townships, conservation districts, and special districts from liability and property loss exposures. We focus on stable pricing with the broadest coverages available.

Over 400 South Dakota local governmental entities currently participate in the SDPAA. If your entity is not among them, we encourage you to contact us to inquire how we may assist in protecting your entity’s assets.

SDPAA does an outstanding job of providing and explaining liability and property coverage. (After a thorough review) of the County's coverages with me, (the SDPAA) was able to save the County a significant amount of money by eliminating double coverage from other companies. If anyone is looking for coverage, the SDPAA does an outstanding job for its Members.  Jim Waterbury, Gregory County Auditor
